May 23 Update

No sooner did we extend the hog's pen... and Karen found a new home for it. Looks like this internship includes pig relocation :P

So, yesterday I drew the entire foundation plan, electrical plan, front, rear and side elevations, plot plan, floor plan... they seem to want to be sure you have a plan before you start work down there at the building department. We submitted all the drawings and applied for a building permit today, so hopefully we can get digging real soon!

That's all I have to say about that.

Oh, I'm doing fine by the way.

Annie Lee Griffin

As I mentioned in my introductory post, I am going to introduce you to the family that this project is for...

This is the low down about Annie Lee from MadCAAP's website. What an amazing woman!

I visited Annie Lee's house this past January and can testify 1) to the incredibly poor condition of the house and 2) to the cleanliness of the interior! Here are some photos of the house and property. (courtesy of John Ramthun's Facebook page, because I am too lazy to upload any from my phone)

The front of the house

The back of the house - yes, the bump-out off the back is pulling away from the main structure

The chicken coop - Recently, an animal got into the coop and Annie Lee lost quite a few of her chickens. Another project this summer will be to rebuild a coop and add raised garden beds to the property

Look at all this January mud! Yet, the inside of the house was spotless.

Poor drainage on the property leaves everything in the mud when it rains, including Annie Lee's hog.

The Krista's Cottages are generally 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 1200 square foot homes. Annie Lee's house, however needs to be able to house up to 13 people on any given night! The new house will be a 5 bedroom, 2 bathroom house and all of this will be fit into a total area of just 1248 square feet!

So... here's a couple request from me...
1. Pray for Annie Lee, her family and all the volunteers who will work very hard toward this goal. Throw some prayers in there for me too :)
2. Consider making a donation toward the house. If you would like to donate toward this new home for Annie Lee, you can do so at http://www.makingservicepersonal.org/. Currently, $20,025 of the $39,000 goal has been raised with just 4 weeks until construction begins.

Welcome to my blog...

So, if you don't already know, I will begin work on May 21 with MadCAAP (Madison Countians Allied Against Poverty) in Canton, MS. This year's project is to build a new home for Annie Lee Griffin. My next post will be about her, her family and the house they live in.

I intend to post stuff here at random intervals over the next 2 months about my time working on this year's Krista Cottage. I'm not much of a writer, but I'll probably write little bits and pieces when I feel like it. You can mostly expect photos of the progress though.
